India has reported its first case of the fast-spreading clade 1b mpox strain in Kerala. The patient, a 38-year-old man who traveled from the UAE, was confirmed as infected by Health Ministry spokesperson Manisha Verma.

India said on Monday that an mpox case involving a man in the southern state of Kerala was from the fast-spreading clade 1b variety, marking South Asia's first recorded case from the new strain. Health Ministry spokesperson Manisha Verma confirmed the strain after news agency ANI cited official sources as saying that the mpox case reported in the Malappuram district of Kerala last week belonged to clade 1.

There has been a global outbreak of monkeypox in many countries, including India. The viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus can affect anyone, and this new strain is believed to spread more rapidly than other strains.

Public health officials are on high alert, implementing enhanced screening measures at international airports.
