Alexander Zverev has revealed that he was diagnosed with pneumonia which caused him to pull out of the China Open, just days after helping Team Europe win the Laver Cup in Berlin.

He suffered two consecutive defeats against American player Taylor Fritz, at the US Open quarter-final and his opening singles match at the Laver Cup. Despite these setbacks, Zverev managed to secure a victory for Team Europe at the Laver Cup by defeating Frances Tiafoe.

Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the China Open less than a week after launching an attack on the ATP for its handling of the tour schedule.

It comes just days after Zverev hit out at the ATP while discussing the busy schedule players are forced to contend with. In a fiery press conference at the Laver Cup, he turned on a reporter when asked what could be done to ease his concerns.

Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu became the latest high-profile player to withdraw from the China Open after the Briton said she was skipping the WTA 1000 tournament due to a foot injury.
