The International Team stormed back into contention on Day 2 of the Presidents Cup in some style, sweeping the USA 5-0 during Friday’s foursomes.

The International team responded to a Thursday thrashing with a 5-0 sweep of its own in Friday foursomes, highlighting the vagaries of match play and adding suspense to the weekend ahead.

After getting swept on Day 1, the International team turned the tide on Day 2, presenting an intriguing weekend on tap.

The Internationals stormed back with massive victories in three matches, including a 7-and-6 win for Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im over Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, and won all five matches overall to tie the biennial event through two days.

The Internationals, down 5-0 to start the day, won all five foursome matches to tie the Americans heading into Saturday.

Patrick Cantlay and and Xander Schauffele, 3-0 in foursomes at the Presidents Cup, never stood a chance against Matsuyama and Im. The Internationals birdied their final seven holes, a staggering streak considering they were alternating shots, for a 7-and-6 win.

After the U.S. side swept the first five matches Thursday at Royal Montreal, International Team Captain Mike Weir, Canadian through and through, described the shutout in hockey terms as only the first period. “There’s a long way to go,” Weir pointed out. “Still significant sessions left. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”

Matsuyama and Im had an incredible Day Two at the Presidents Cup, putting the first International point on the board with authority.
